Curriculum - Grade 6 Science

Physics
Energy can be carried from one place to another
When fuel is consumed energy released becomes heat energy
Heat flows in solids by conduction
Heat flows in fluids by conduction and convection
Heat energy is also transferred between objects by radiation

Meteorology
The sun is the major source of energy on Earth's surface
Solar energy reaches Earth through radiation
Convection currents distribute heat in the atmosphere and oceans
Differences in the atmosphere result in changes of weather

Biology
Sunlight is transferred into energy through photosynthesis
Matter is transferred over time
Populations of organisms can be categorized
Different organisms play similar ecological roles in similar biomes
An ecosystem depends on the resources available

Geography
Utility of energy sources
Natural energy and material resources
Natural origin of materials used to make common objects
Water running downhill is a process changing the landscape
Rivers and streams are dynamic systems
Beaches are dynamic systems

Geology
Heat from Earth's interior reaches the surface through convection
Evidence of plate tectonics
Earth is composed of several layers
Lithospheric plates the size of continents and oceans move
Earthquakes are motions along faults
Volcanoes are locations where magma reaches the surface
Major geologic events result from plate motions
Explain major features of regional geology
Determine the epicenter of an earthquake and the effects
Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods

Scientific Process
Develop a hypothesis
Select and use appropriate tools and technology
Construct appropriate graphs and develop qualitative statements
Communicate the steps and results from an investigation
Recognize whether evidence is consistent
Read a topographic map and a geologic map
Interpret events by sequence and time from natural phenomena
Identify changes in natural phenomena over time
